Can anyone help with this inventory please.
It is from 1678 and is from Westmorland.

I have transcribed most but the line I am stuck with is
Item a paire of ??Tommes (what are those?) S? & windlecloth

I have left some other lines on to compare with.

The second word is:  Seive = Sieve.

The word before that is:  Temmes

I'm not sure what to make of it.

According to a glossary I have  a "temse" is a sieve.  So maybe two different types of sieve?

Given that Seive is definitely not plural I would think you are right.  Thanks for the explanation of the term.

Windel is German for nappy (US diaper) - could "windlecloth" be a dialect word with similar connotations?

Sounds to me like stuff that may be used in a dairy -sieves are used, aren't they, in cheesemaking etc.?

I have in one Glossary of words that windle was a window so thought it was a window cloth but now I am beginning to doubt that.

I suppose the windlecloth could be like a winnowing cloth to help seperate the grain from the chaff.

Does anyone else have a thought on it?
