Rostand - France
« on: Tuesday 21 March 17 17:23 GMT (UK) »
I have been told that Rostand BELL, who I am trying to trace in Scotland, possibly came from French immigrants. The forename seems very unusual and wonder if anyone can confirm it is a French name?

Rostand is a French surname, although not a hugely common one. Perhaps a Miss Rostand married into the Bell family somewhere?

You would have to give more detailed information about your Mr Rostand Bell - when and where are we looking for him as I do not see any records at all for any such person. It seems quite possible the spelling for the first name you have is a mistranscription.

Looking at Mickawinn's previous posts on the Bell family, I am wondering if "Rostand" is a typo for Roland.

I had the same thought after looking at the previous posts  :)

Rostand was the name on a handwritten document held by the family. As I have been unable to trace the name I tried Roland (possible transcription error) but have drawn a blank. Hence a bit more delving into the name Rostand, the family are convinced there is a French connection.

Rolland could be another possibility. There are a few Rolland Bells around.

Rostand or alternatives was the the father of Paul Bell. Paul's wife was Esther. We believe they were Scottish but in Canada in 1910 they had a baby Dorothy whose baptism record shows the BELLs as parents and Benjamin and Alice Drew as adopted parents. Alice brought Dorothy to England in 1912 but died almost as soon as she arrived. Dorothy was the 'adopted' 'fostered' by a family named Farrington. I am trying to trace the blood family BELLs who supposedly came from Scotland.
