I think it could be Vacc - short for vaccination, so maybe a mark on his left arm.

Good evening,

From what I recall of my medical training (regt'l medic class2) only two vaccinations leave a visible scar that could be used as a distinguishing mark.

Smallpox inoculation is the obvious one or the BCG jab after 1921.

This record is from 1899 so more likely to be smallpox if you are correct in your thinking John.
