Given the 1870 Michigan info it would seem that Spouse Mary A. ? may have passed before 1870 or perhaps a divorce?

Given the last child born(1851) was in Michigan, possibly she passed there or they separated there.

Given Michigan census data it seems Thomas left Michigan between 1860 and 1880/81.

There is an arrival document for a Thomas Clark birth about 1811, arriving in Ontario in 1871 but there is no detail or image available.  There is also a William Clark arriving same year but unable to see if it was Thomas and son William travelling together. There is a "Source Publication Code" listed and it is different for the two men.

I assume that if these are the relatives they may have missed the 1871 census in Canada.

Is there an online source for the travel record images or detailed transcriptions?

Do you have any proof that William returned to Canada? There is an entry for a William Clark who matches your William on the 1880 US census in St. Clair, St. Clair County Michigan with a wife named Ella:

I haven't found a marriage for this couple yet but it would seem to be a possibility that this is your William.

I believe the entries you are looking at are from the Bruce Elliott "Index to the 1871 Census of Ontario". It is a list of people who are in Ontario on the 1871 census that were born in another country. The 1871 date is not the arrival year - it's the census year.

If the source bibliography listed is different, please post what it is.
