Thomas Clark birth 31 Jan 1811 in Invernessshire, Scotland

Looking for a marriage for a Thomas Clark born 31 JAN 1811  Invernessshire, Scotland.

Also a post on United States forum http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=767834.0

Information so far indicates he married a Mary A (unknown maiden name) His occupation was Baker. We earlier thought he was married in Michigan but now suspect he married in Ontario. He did move to Michigan for a period of time and we know two daughters were born there.

The 1851 US or Michigan census has his family as Clarke

Their first child William A Clark was born about 1844 in Canada according to one census so perhaps a Michigan marriage was a wild goose chase. We have found no marriage record in Ontario for Thomas and Mary and cannot find any birth records for children.

A post on the US board had the suggestion for a marriage Thomas Clark to  Mary Shannon 17 March 1840 in Bathurst, Ontario.  The record contains little info to link this to the family. Looking for any other record from the area that might link his occupation or have other family in the area.

There are a number of siblings that we have no record of and possibly they were in the Bathurst area.  So far no census record to substantiate that.

Daughter Johanna is listed as  born in Michigan about 1849 and Isabella born about 1851 in Michigan.  We know Isabella married a Robert Allan, possibly a baker, 17 Jul 1873 in London, Ontario

We know Thomas returned to Canada by the 1881 Canada census and that his spouse had passed away, date and location unknown.  Thomas passed in or near Wroxeter, Ontario and is buried with his sister,Janet "Jessie" Clark, in the Wroxeter cemetery

The census record you note would be the 1850 US Federal Census for Michigan.  Interestingly, Thomas is noted in the 1860 Census in St. Clair, Michigan as aged 44, a baker, living alone with his son, William, aged 15 (born Canada).  Perhaps his wife was already deceased and the girls have gone to live elsewhere.

The Thomas Clark/Mary Shannon are likely not yours.  Records on familysearch.org show that his sons, Alexander and John, married in Eastern Ontario in the 1890s.

The marriage of Isabella Clark in 1873 to Robert Allen (also a baker) took place "at the residence of the bride's uncle" in London, Middlesex County, Ontario.  Witnesses were an A. Sharp and an A. Smith.  1871 Canadian Census for London shows Isabella, aged 20, born US, living in the home of William and Catherine Clark, aged 62 and 60 respectively, both born in Scotland.  William is noted as a bookseller, and most likely a brother to Thomas.

Thanks for the added info.

We wonder if perhaps the spouse died in childbirth with daughter but have not found a death.

We have some detail on Isabella and William was indeed a brother and seller of bibles and other religious books.  The family lived/worked on Carling Street in London.  Much of the street is now gone to redevelopment.

Isabella had a number of children and we have info on most.  Wondering if she moved after her mother passed or perhaps there was a divorce/separation?

Again, many thanks and we will continue the search!

I had a quick check on freecen & wondered if possibly Thomas was married prior to arriving in Canada, given his age when 1st child was born in 1844 (he would have been 33 yrs) i.e. a previous marriage could have been possible?

Don't mean to put you off track though!

Another possibility for a marriage in Quebec - there is a marriage for Thomas Clarke, baker, of Montreal and Mary Ann Gibbons, spinster, of same place on the 19th day of September(?) 1834. The marriage was in the parish records of Presbyterian Saint Gabriel in the Drouin Collection.

Is this Johanna's marriage which unfortunately doesn't mention parents:

 Hi Jacquie

Great leads.

The Montreal connection fits the family story.  Thomas' brother William Clark 1807-1874 came to Canada in 1833 and lived in Montreal for a period before moving east and ultimately settling in London.  He was well known and there is a detailed obituary that has added many details.

It would make sense that his brother either came with him or arrived soon after.

I have struggled to find any record of arrival for either men or most of their other siblings.

No sign of a death for Thomas' spouse.  Possibly in Michigan but so far no match and nothing in Ontario

Johanna's wedding seems great fit.  We will see where that leads.  Perhaps a death with parents listed? :-)

The 1870 US Census in Huron County, Michigan have a Cyrus and Anna Hathaway aged 32 and 21 and born in New York and Michigan respectively.  Cyrus dies at an old age in Macomb Co. Michigan in 1928, married to his second wife, also named Annie.  They were married about 1890 according to census which suggests that Joanna died before that time.

Cyrus and Joanna had at least one child, Isabella, born about 1874 who marries a James Fulcher in 1911.  She had been married once before:

And her first marriage:

Regarding the marriage of Joanna to Cyrus and the second wife in the census documents.   Could this be Johanna going by Anna or Annie?   I have another Johanna that I found as Anna in several documents.

Unable to find the census that shows the marriage date for Anna/Annie in 1890 but will keep searching
