Who was William McCULLOUGH's mother?
« on: Wednesday 22 March 17 22:36 GMT (UK) »
William is a great grandfather of my wife. He was born in the early 1850s, in the Ballymena area of County Antrim. We have been unable to find a baptism for him, or his mother's name.

On 7th January 1874 William married Margaret MILLAR at the 3rd Presbyterian Church, Ballymena. His age is given as "full", and his father's name is also William McCULLOUGH, a farmer.

In the 1901 census, his age is 47 years.
In the 1911 census, his age is 58 years.

In December 1911 William, his wife, daughter Agnes, and two grandchildren left London for New Zealand, to join the other members of his family here.

William died in Christchurch, New Zealand on April 17th 1929. His age on his death registration is given as 82 years. His age at marriage as 21 years. The informant did not know the name of William's mother. I have attached a copy of this registration.

The naming patterns of William's children may give a clue to his mother's name.
His first child, James, named for Margaret MILLAR's father
Second child, William, named for William's father.
Third child, Jane, named for Margaret MILLAR's mother
Fourth child, John - family name?
Fifth child, Mary Ann ??
Sixth child, Martha.

What address is listed for William at time of his marriage?

A William and Martha McCullough lived in Rocavan/Racavan townland in right timescale to potentially have been 'your' William's parents, so are worth checking.

Posts crossed. I see your William's townland at marriage was Racavan, so this fits with my suggested potential parents.

I found the probate of a William McCullough of Racavan, with wife Martha, who died in 1863. I was unable to link him with my wife's ancestor, though.

Our posts crossed.

Added - the will mentions "son John", and a John McCullough is a witness on William's marriage registration.
