Help please, Moycarkey baptism, 1858
« on: Friday 24 March 17 07:17 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking at the image of the baptism of Mary MAHER, April 4 1858, in the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915

This is what I see:
Mary of Edmond MAHER and Ellen MAHER, Sps: Patrick L???land, Ellen Maher, Tberadora.

My questions are:
Can I assume from this that Ellen's maiden name was MAHER?  The mothers listed in other records on this page are shown with surnames that are different from the father's surname so I assume that the listing on the record is the maiden name.

Because the entry is squashed in it's a bit tricky to sort out -  can I assume that Tuberadora is their residence and that Galbestown belongs to the record above that?

Is it Tuberadora?  This place name is mentioned a page or so earlier in these registers and that's what it looks like but Googlemap doesn't seem to find it for me.  For that matter I can't see Moycarkey either although a Morcarkey National School is shown.  Is there still a church there?  Mary MAHER emigrated to Victoria Australia (I have good information about her from there on) and the informant for her death certificate gave her birthplace as Holy Cross which I see has a very big church. Obviously the information from her baptism is more reliable than that given after her death.

Judith

PS Google tells me that there is a Catholic church built early 19th century.

There is a place called Toberadora in the Civil Parish of Galie which is in the general area, need a bit more looking into.

Toberadora comes under the neighbouring parish of Boherlahan.

Think it's Patrick ????y and Ellen Maher for the sponsors, a look around the pages may show a clearer example of his name.
I wonder if the second place name is for the second Ellen Maher so as not to confuse her with the mother.
It does look like the mother's maiden name is Maher.

If their marriage isn't in Moycarkey, Boheriahan might prove fruitful.

Sinann and dathai -thank you very much - so many MAHERs!

Yes, I think the male sponsor's name is Patrick LAHY, with the lettering that looked as though it was part of his name is just the word 'and'.  I still think that 'Galbestown' belongs to the record above (Simon s/o Simon Lonergan) which otherwise doesn't have a place name attached to it as all of the others do.
