William Wright born Guisborough c1874
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 16:53 BST (UK) »
I cannot find the records for what ought to be a straightforward search.  William Wright is in the 1881 Census, aged 6, born Guisborough, and living there with his widower father James Wright (aged 36, born Gedney in Lincolnshire).  Thereafter I have nothing.  Father James is lodging with others 1891, 1901 and 1911 in the Guisborough/Grangetown area, and does not re-marry; William is elusive, although I think I've located him in Eston in 1911.  Equally elusive is a death for William's mother, between 1874 and early 1881, and a marriage for his parents.

Furthermore I can't locate William's 1874 birth record in Guisborough.  This is frustrating because I cannot find a marriage record for James either.  Therefore I don't know who is the mother of William.  I've looked at a Jane Desborough in Lincolnshire, but her husband, James, came from Whaplode not Gedney.  From mid-1870s Guisborough records, an Elizabeth Wright died in 1876 aged 29; this looks to have been a death in childbirth as George aged 0 is recorded on the same reference, June Qtr 1876, vol 9d, p292.  Her maiden name was Allan.  I can't find a marriage between James Wright - Elizabeth Allan.

As I say, I thought this was going to be a simple search but it is proving the opposite.  Can anyone throw light on any of the above points?

Thanks

BB

Thanks everyone.  It's these contradictions that throw me.  This Jane suddenly comes into the occasion.  The Wright-Garbutt link is good (William born June Qtr 1874 Guisbro  mother Garbutt) but James's father was William Wright.  At what point do you describe there's a clerical or transcription error?  I think I have spotted the 1891 Census entry before.  My apologies for not including it in my original post.

The information on the 1873 marriage was from the original church record, not a transcript, and I've double-checked and it definitely names James' father as John Wright.

There is a burial in Guisborough on 26 Dec 1874 - Jane Ann Wright of Northgate, aged 33.  This is the same address as William's baptism and ties in with James being a widower by the 1881 census.

I wondered if the father's forenames had been switched around in error, but there is a baptism in Guisborough on 20 Mar 1841 of Jane Ann Garbutt d/o William & Elizabeth Garbutt, Baker.

If I have the right family then William Wright died in 1858 when James will have been about 13, and James didn't marry until 1873, when he will have been around 28.

His older brother was John William Wright, so could he have simply forgotten his fathers name and so used his brother's name instead, perhaps assuming that John had been named after their father?

It begins to look as this is one of those times when one might accept that information in a record might reflect what was honestly but inaccurately reported.

William Wright (1812-58) was an agricultural labourer; the 'ag' bit mattered in Lincolnshire but to a Middlesborough cleric 'labourer' would probably suffice.  William's wife, Maria (Wilkins), eventually followed her elder sons north and is there in the 1881 Census.  She died in Guisborough in 1888.  In the 1881 Census, James is listed as an iron miner.  I think part of my trouble is thinking only of coal mining; I thought all of the family members who migrated from Lincs/Norfolk went into the ironworks.

Many thanks to you all for your diligent work here; it is very much appreciated.
