Thanks for all this, Ian. I really appreciate your time and effort. I shall now start putting it all together for my friend.

One thing that puzzles me is the surname of Johanne Marie. On Family Search, it is sometimes Larsen and sometimes Larsdr (I can see the latter as an abbreviation for Larsdatter). Is it just a different way of saying the same name or am I right in thinking that the correct name must be that on the marriage entry: Larsdatter?

Also on the marriage record, do the 24 and 5/12 in Johann's column and the 35 and 3/12 in Johanne's column refer to their ages at the time of marriage? I can't seem to find a translation for what looks like 'clav' after these figures. If so, I'm hoping this will help me locate both of their births/christenings. Pity the name of their respective fathers don't seem to be given -just the bestmen!

Thanks again,
Jill

Hi
I don't know why her surname differs like that. Perhaps because of the minister trying to modernise a little. Larsen: son of; Larsdatter: daughter of.

"clav" is Aar which means 'years"".

I think she would have been born Larsdatter.

And I had my glasses on!!!!!

Thanks. Did a bit of googling as to what constituted Pomerania at this time and I'm pretty sure I've found Johan's christening in a place called Domitz in Mecklenburg-Schwerin (now Germany). Thanks to you finding the marriage record giving his near-exact age in Aug 1859, I think Jan 1834 might just fit the bill of 24 years and 5 months. Now to find a christening (presumably in Denmark) for Johanne Marie.

All this is certainly improving my European geography!

Ian,

Did you have any luck finding them on the 1860 census? I've failed miserably. I was hoping to find Johan's first wife Johanne's birthplace.

Oh sorry, I thought I had written it up. She was born in Frederickshavn.

Vidunderlig!!

Thanks, Ian. Found her - once I'd realised the boys and girls were listed separately for some reason.

Thanks once again.
