George Joyce born 1850
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 22:20 BST (UK) »
My Great-Great-Grandfather George Joyce was born in St Georges, Surrey, in 1850, according to his Army record. He served with the 88th Regt. of Foot/1st Batt. Connaught Rangers, joining up in 1864. I have a copy of his records and his marriage certificate from 1872, which states his father is Thomas Joyce (deceased), undertaker. So far I have drawn a blank on Thomas, any early census George appears on, or other members of his family.
Has anyone else got George or Thomas in their family tree?
His daughter married Herbert Child and that branch I have got back to families in Sussex in the 1600's, be nice to find out about the Joyce family too.

Hi,

It would appear that George was your gt gt grandfather's middle name, this from FreeBMD:

Joyce, John George; Births Sept Qtr 1850; St Geo Southk reg dist; Volume 4 Page 479.

St Geo Southk is St George Southwark. The new GRO indexes give a mothers maiden name of Law.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Hi,

There is this 1851 census reference HO107 Piece 1553 Folio 398 Page 1

John George Joyce born Stepney 1850 parents Thomas & Ann but Thomas is a painter - not an undertaker

The above John George Joyce birth was registered in the March qtr of 1850 in Stepney reg dist. The OP stated that their relative was born in St Georges, Surrey.

I cannot find the Southwark born John George Joyce on census returns at all.

Kind regards

David

Hi,

The only Joyce/Law marriage is 1845 - John Richard Joyce to Rosa Ann Law in Lambeth and no baptism to give us a clue

The above marriage took place at St Mary's church, Lambeth on 5th July 1845.

John Richard Joyce, a bachelor & a carrier by trade & Rosa Ann Law, spinster, both of full age & both of Park Street. Fathers given as James Joyce a carrier & John Law a carpenter, deceased. Witnesses G Walliss? & F Romney?

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

I deliberately didn't post marriage details as it is not the right marriage.  OP says father is stated to be Thomas - occ undertaker

There is no Thomas Joyce marriage to a female Law between 1837-1850 so I suspect the 1850 birth may not be the correct one and his birth may have been unregistered.

There is no 1851 entry for a Thomas Joyce with an occ of undertaker so I wonder if George was illegitimate

What address did George give when he signed up, maybe we can track him in the census from that.

Thank you everyone for the help so far. Unfortunately there is no clue to an address, only place of birth. He signed up in Westminster in 1864 aged 14 and a half, so I imagine the family were either poor or one parent. His final resting place is in an unmarked grave in Gosport, Hampshire, along with his wife and two young children who are unrelated to them. I believe it was the custom to use a recent unmarked grave for such burials; Kate, George's wive died in 1924, the children within a year of that.
