Railway Lawman
« on: Monday 27 March 17 19:39 BST (UK) »
Hi All, I have a relative Laurence David Anderson born 1851 Lerwick, Shetland, Scotland, who came down to Liverpool and began work on the Railway's first as a Porter 1881-1891, then in 1901 as a Railway Lawman,or could be Foreman in 1901 ,the later census 1911 is Railway Lawman, does anyone know what a Railway Lawman actually did ?Many thanks' .

Hi Tsumi

I can't find the 1901, but the 1911 looks like Foreman to me.

What does everyone else think?

Thanks  Giggsy, I thought it may be Foreman , but wanted another opinion ,not to clever deciphering F,s and L,s and a few other letters.
Many thanks for your time.

The 1901 only shows his initials, not his full forenames.

Both records look like Foreman to me - 1901 says Railway Station Foreman and it looks like the word Port has been written above it in a different hand.

This link, its several pages long, lists a number of railway foreman jobs,  it's very unlikely that he was in the locomotive division, or a foreman platelayer, but Jomots post suggests that at that time he was at Liverpool Riverside station, where many trains arrived carrying passengers and their luggage to embark on the ocean liners,

The amount of " luggage in advance" sent by passengers has to be seen to be believed.  :)

So, a responsible job near the top of his profession
