Keane

I am searching for the Keane family that were whalers before 1800. I understand it was two brothers but don't know how to go about searching for whalers and their ships. My 2nd great grandfather changed his name when he came to American around 1812.

Welcome to rootschat branbec

Whaling in Ireland has never been very extensive
LINK to interesting brief description of origins and history.

There was a connection between Newfoundland and waterford LINK to book "Twentieth-Century Shore-Station Whaling in Newfoundland and Labrador" by Anthony Dickinson & Chesley Sanger

If your Keane brothers were ship owners or wealthy businessmen you may locate records of them, if however they were just crew members, you probably will not unless they achieved something remarkable to be honored.  You are looking a time of low literacy and few surviving records to help your search.
