Nancy Willoughby
« on: Wednesday 29 March 17 18:48 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some assistance in tracing a woman from the time of her marriage in 1908 to her birth in 1874.

The marriage record for the 3rd qtr 1908 at Croydon,Surrey gave a marriage between Nancy Willoughby and Michael P (Panoty) Nicolaidi but I noticed also the name of Annie Jane Crisp in the same record and family information says they are the same woman.

The probate record has Annie Jane Nicolaidi "otherwise Nancy", widow, died Sept. 6,1920 in Tunbridge Wells. The probate for her husband Michael Panyoti Nicolaidi  states he died April 20,1920 in Tunbridge Wells and that the executor of his estate was his wife Annie Jane Nicolaidi.

Family information says that Nancy (a.k.a Annie Jane) was English and raised in India and lived for a time at Smyrna (a Greek City on the Aegean coast). Her future husband Michael Nicolaidi who was born in Italy lived in Greece and spoke Greek and it was perhaps there that they first met.

Family information says that Nancy's maiden name was Crisp and that she married a Mr Willoughby and with her had a daughter but I cant find any marriage record about this. She did name one of her sons Willoughby from her marriage to Mr. Nicholaidi.

Any help in solving this mystery would be appreciated.

The new GRO birth search gives the mothers maiden name as Willoughby Crisp for the 1910 birth.

Do you know the maiden surname of Annie Jane/Nancy's mother?

Have you actually got any of the certificates or just the index entries?

Hi,

From the FIBIS website:

In the Times of India, issue dated 25th Feb 1873.

William Crisp to Emma Collins in Bombay on the date as stated by Mabel Bagshawe (3rd Feb 1873)

It has the following additional info:

Register Entry: Feb 3rd at Bombay by the Rev John Paton. MA William Crisp to Emma relict of the late M Collins Esq.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Hi,

Emma Crisp, b c1848 Bombay, married, living on own means, lodging in a boarding house in Kensington

I wonder if Emma was possibly illegitimate, again from Fibis:

Bombay Marriages 1848/Allens Indian Mail, issue 4th Oct 1848

John Wray to Emma Sarah Willoughby, Bombay, 17th Aug 1848

Extra Info: Wray, Lieut. John, adj. 24th N.I. to Emma Sarah, d. of the late Maj. Edward Willoughby, at Bombay, Aug 17.

I can't actually see a birth for an Emma Willoughby.

Emma Willoughby married Michael Collins in Bombay in 1862.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David
