Thomas Wratten B 1795
« on: Wednesday 29 March 17 19:03 BST (UK) »
I have been stumped at my 3GGrandfather's ancestors for some time now.  He was born about 1795 in the county of Kent & came to the US (probably landed in New York) sometime before 1820.  He settled temporarily in Ohio, then stayed in Indiana until his death.
He married a Mary from Massachusetts & had their 1st son, William, in Ohio about 1821.
I have been unable to find immigration records or passenger lists with his name, or similar sounding name.  I have searched available cemetery records for possible siblings or ancestors buried in Kent, but very few Wrattens have been found through these sources.
I am a World member of Ancestry.com and have utilized all their resources in this quest, albeit unsucessfully.
Does anyone have any info on this Kent line, or a better direction to point me in?
Thank you so much!
SH

It seems likely that the Thomas Wratten as found by Bearcat stayed in and around Kennington.  It appears that he married a Harriet Miller and had at least 8 children baptised (the last in 1837) at Kennington.

There are three others (that I have found) but none born in 1795.  They are,
at Tenterden 1790 son of Stephen & Mary,
at Barham 1797 son of John & Sarah
at Marden 1801 son of Thomas & Elizabeth (found on 1871 UK Census)

But, as Bearcat says there may be others.

There is an online family tree for Thomas & Harriett

http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/l/e/e/Pamela--Lee/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0159.html

It gives his date of birth/baptism as 28 Feb 1796. I can't see this date on any online sources.  Is it the same man  ???

Stephen of Tenterden had 4 sons - George and William (who both died before their father), Stephen plus one other which is not decipherable from his tombstone but I presume it was a Thomas.  There is a burial for a Thomas Wratten at Tenterden 29 March 1803 aged 38 years so he's too old to be Stephen's son.

I'll keep looking ......

To all intent it is the same man.  Apart from the discrepancy on the date of birth, everything else on the tree fits, with marriage and baptisms of the children.

Emigration to Australia (State of Victoria) was the route that this family took.
