Lindsay Gourlay (1887-1963) in Oregon *** COMPLETED ***
« on: Saturday 01 April 17 10:37 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I've hit a bit of a brick wall again, this time in trying to find out when Lindsay was married  :(

He was born on 10 Mar 1887 in 39 North Street, St Andrews, Fife, and died on 23 Dec 1963 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA.  He married LILLIAN VIOLET SONTAG who was born about 1906 in Washington County, Oregon, USA, and died on 3 May 2003 in Terrebonne, Deschutes County, Oregon, USA.

Between his birth in 1887 and the 1901 Census, Lindsay lived in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland and I have then traced him, with Lillian, in the 1930 and 1940 US Census records living in Faloma, Multnomah County, Oregon.

Lindsay's death was intimated in "The Oregonian" Portland, Oregon, USA on Wednesday 25 December 1963
"GOURLAY- December 23, Lindsay, 176 NE Bridgeton rd.; beloved husband of Lillian; Uncle of Bob
Duncan. Services Thursday, December 26, 11 am. at THE LITTLE CHAPEL OF THE CHIMES, 430 N Killingsworth. Vault interment Columbian cemetery."

Can anyone help me with details of his marriage to Lillian please?

Regards

I tried to attach a copy of their marriage certificate, but apparently the file size is too large.  You can find the certificate at https://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/record

Many thanks Sandra and Inor

The License Application is very helpful  :) and confirms the absence of children in the death intimation.  I can't access the record that Inor sent the link for though  :(

Interesting extra.

The Oregonian
Friday, December 26, 1958

A month ago Thursday a 71-year old man, Linday Gourlay, vanished from his north country home and his disappearance is mushrooming into increasingly complex puzzle for sheriff's deputies.

Gourlay, a retired storekeeper, lived at 176 NE Bridgeton Rd. He was last seen the evening of Nov. 25 walking toward home from a hamburger stand near NE 6th Ave. and Marine Dr.

MISSING MAN TO COME HOME

A 71 year old man. Lindsay Gourlay, 176 N Bridgeton Rd. missing since Nov.25, has turned up in King County Hospital at Seattle, sheriff's detectives reported Monday.

Detectives learned over the weekend that Gourlay has been there since Nov. 28. He had no identification upon entering the hospital but authorities there finally learned enough from him to ascertain his identity and contact his wife, Lillian, 52. She notified deputies and was to make arrangements for his release and return home.

There was no explanation how Gourlay, a tetired grocer, got to Seattle. He was last seen walking toward home from a hamburger stand on NE Marine drive the evening of Nov. 25.
