Until recently I was able to print directly from a PDF without having to save the file first, which is what I wanted to do. Now, I have to save the PDF first. Any tips on how I can go back to having just one step instead of 2 or 3? I haven't changed my computer/browser. I'd be very grateful for any advice.

Looks as though it could be a number of things, try to work through the suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion & link Purlin. Took a look at the page and tried some of the suggestions. Then my computer started to  freeze when I tried to print from a PDF!! However I solved the problem by uninstalling adobe and instead installing Foxit. I've printed out the files I wanted.
