? Death - John Browne Smith- ?Litchurch
« on: Sunday 02 April 17 05:32 BST (UK) »
In the 1871 Census John Browne Smith (b. Dartmouth 1915) is in Litchurch, an attorney, with his wife Ann N. Smith b. London and ? daughter Amelia b. Coventry. Never heard of her - were they fostering her as they are not her parents on her Birth Certificate.

In the 1881 Census Ann Smith is at Margate, a widow with family members, the Childs , Battens etc. She later is a Matron at the Gentleman's Club in London.

I have never been able  to find John Browne Smith's Death and as he is my 2x gr,grandfather I am anxious to complete this part of my family history. I have been searching for years, putting aside and then starting again. Has anyone any suggestions please? Did he die in Derbyshire etc. or maybe moved somewhere else?

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Faith

In his evidence in court in 1870 ( "The solicitor and the ballet girl") he said that he had separated from his wife - she had left him 12 years earlier. So possibly the Ann Smith aged 30 with whom he is living in the 1871 census is not his wife ? Might she be the mother of Amelia?

From The London Gazette, Issue 21521, page 462:
Court for the Relief of Insolvent Debtors, Saturday the 11th day of February 1854
John Browne Smith, late of Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, Attorney & Solicitor. - In the Gaol of Stafford.

There's also this in The Commercial Exchange?
Protests on Bills of Exchange, Lanarkshire
John Browne Smith, Writer, 65 West Regent Street, Glasgow
2 August 1878, £27 11s 4d
23 August 1878, £10 18s 9d
Holders of both: Westminster & General Life Assurance Association, London

If this is the same John Browne Smith, then maybe he died in Scotland?

In evidence in 1870 he said he three times been jailed for debt.

There is a Glasgow insolvency in 1879 which could be him:

(Column 1, penultimate item)

I believe "writer" is a Scottish term for solicitor

Since the Ann Smith wife in 1871 is 20 years younger than John I would agree with Shaun that she isn't his wife Ann Norah but someone John lived with after separating from his wife

Might that Ann be his daughter? She's the right age. Baptised at All Hallows Lombard Street in 1841 - not very far from Bishopsgate.
