We are on to something Claire.
There's a lot of information about the Baker family at:
http://www.faysampson.co.uk/5.BAKER-BRETT.htm
**
Unfortunately, Eliza's (apparent) sister Susan died in 1823 and Samuel Lilly Baker died about the same time. Samuel Chamberlain Baker died in 1843.
**
There's seems little doubt about the connection.

Snap - I've just been reading that  ;D

I can't see any reference to them in Devon though as yet, I've been looking for baptisms.

A couple of things - there is an apprentice record on F M P ( maybe on Anc* too) of a master Coach maker - Daniel Harrod of Exeter, c1762

A baptism of a Samuel Harrod in 1782 Exeter son of Robert and Elizabeth.

Possibly worth looking into further - one of these could be Eliza and Susannahs parent.

So Samuel Lilly Baker is a surgeon in his marriage documents, but a Deal boatman according to the family site.
**
"The 1801 census for Deal shows Samuel Lilly Baker, in Short Street, heading a household of four males and two females. The identity of the second female is not clear. Although many Deal people had a middle name, these are not usually given in this census. Samuel Lilly’s full name distinguishes him from his father. He may have given both names to the enumerator because this was how he was commonly known. In common with most Deal men, Samuel Lilly reports that none of his household is employed in agriculture or trade. He had not followed in his father’s business of pipemaking, but was one of the hundreds of Deal boatmen worked as ‘hovellers’, servicing the vast numbers of ships which anchored in the Downs on their way up or down the English Channel."

Hmmm.

We should try and find baptisms for their children  - didn't they have a large family ? And only 6 or so grew to adulthood

Of 23 trees on Anc* that include Eliza Harrod, none of them have a date of death. I contacted a private tree holder who may have more information.
I added Eliza's daughter Eliza Caroline and her husband Charles Orlando Bridgeman to my tree. I'm reluctant to add too many more of that family as it's getting far away from my direct line and I have other projects calling.
Did the newspaper article that you first mentioned (Claire) give any more clues as to her residences/connections?
Thanks for helping me with the search for the elusive Eliza.
