Brick wall: St. Louis marriage ca 1928
« on: Monday 03 April 17 17:50 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the marriage record of Elmer Lee Smith (1900-1942) and Carrie Marks (1881-1944).  They had no children.  On the 1930 Missouri census they are in St. Louis, where I am assuming they were married.  They were divorced before the 1940 census, where Elmer's wife's name is May.  Elmer may have been Carrie's second husband.  I have both Carrie's and Elmer's death certificates, but cannot find a record of their marriage.  ???
Any help would be very much appreciated.

If the information about their ages at 1st marriage on the 1930 census is accurate, they had been married for about 2 years at that time.

There is a link for St. Louis marriages that are not fully indexed on familysearch.org here - http://www.germanroots.com/stlouis.html

Thanks very much for the link, Shelly.
I don't see Elmer in the male index for 1928, so will just have to keep looking.
Thanks again.

Update - Wrong family; please see the next post.

If Carrie had a sister named Hazel (I'm not sure if I have found the correct Marks family - apologies if I've gone off on a tangent)...

1930 St. Louis Census
Elmer Smith, age 30
Carrie Smith, age 38 (c1892), born in Missouri, parents born in Germany
[Is this the correct couple?]   :-\

Carrie Marks, born 20 December 1892, St. Louis, MO
Parents: Charles Marks and Caroline Housohn

1900 St. Louis Census
Charly (born Louisiana) and Carry (born Missouri) Marks and their children
Carrie, age 7, born December 1892

Hazel died in 1921.  Her parents were Charles Marks and Carrie Huyson.
Mrs. Carrie ? [Crumb?] of 1809A? Elliot was the informant.

1920 St. Louis City Directory
Herbert Crump, huckster, h 1809A Elliot Avenue

1920 St. Louis Census
Herbert Crump
Carrie, age 28, born Missouri, parents born Louisiana and Missouri

Have not yet found a marriage certificate for Smith, Marks or Crump.  Again, perhaps the above is for a different Marks family?  ???

Update:  The above is the wrong family.  Carrie and Herbert Krump are found in the 1930 census.   :-[

Hi Lisa,
You have the correct couple on the 1930 census:

1930 St. Louis Census
Elmer Smith, age 30
Carrie Smith, age 38, born in Missouri, parents born in Germany
(Carrie was quite a bit older than Elmer, so her real age in 1930 was more like 49.)

Carrie Marks was born 19 Oct 1881 in Nevada, Vernon, MO.  Her father (my great-grandfather) was Johann Adam Marx.  (The spelling of the surname eventually became "Marks".)  Carrie's mother was Christine ("Tena") Krueger, Johann Adam's second wife.

I appreciate so much your effort to help.  Thank you.
