DOVER CASTLE
« on: Thursday 28 July 05 14:09 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Can anyone help. My ancestor visited Dover Castle Kent in 1871. She was a widow of 81 and was mentioned as a civilian in the census.

I believe she might have been visiting her grandson, Francis Fisk.

Could anyone tell me how I might discover whether Francis was indeed there and, if so, in what capacity/regiment.

I am hundreds of miles from the national archive. Hence request.

Best wishes and thanks

What makes you think she was visiting her Grandson ?

I had a quick look for Francis Fisk in the 1871, only 5 come up and none in Dover, also looked under Francis and Fisk using Dover, no joy I'm afraid..if he was in the Army it's possible he was overseas - do you have him in 61 and 81 census?

Hello and thanks for your help. I wondered why a widow of 81 would be visiting Dover Castle in 1871 (probably not to get value for money from her English Heritage Membership!) and a friend guessed she might have been visiting a member of the family stationed there.

Francis was the oldest grandson and would have been old enough to be in the army, so I guessed, really.

Would you have any other ideas?

Best wishes
