Lawrence Sheehan - Wireless Operator on HMAT Karoola
« on: Tuesday 04 April 17 10:26 BST (UK) »
Lawrence was born in Smeaton Victoria in 1888 and worked as a telegraph operator at Ballarat West.   During WW1, he worked as a wireless operator on HMAT Karoola.   He died in 1949.   Even varying the spelling of his Christian name and surname, I have not been able to identify an appropriate record at either the Australian War Memorial or the National Archives.   I presume that as a crew member of a transport ship, he did not have to enlist and there are no embarkation details for him.   Would appreciate any suggestions as to where to look for further information.   ???

I'd guess he was a Merchant Seaman. Presumably there must be some records somewhere relating to the Australian Merchant Navy.
