From Dorset to Lancashire? (Green)
« on: Tuesday 04 April 17 11:02 BST (UK) »
I have my gr gr grandparents Elisha & Elizabeth Green and family in Iwerne Minster upto and including 1871 census. After that I cannot find them in Dorset at all?
They appear to have travelled north to Caton & Brookhouse nr Lancaster, which seems an awful long way to travel way back then? It seems that Elizabeth died around 1872 and is buried in the churchyard at Brookhouse.  Amelia married locally.
What brought them so far from Dorset? Would this have been for work?

census Iwerne Minster 1871.
113; ; Elisha; GREEN; Head; Mar; 36; Ag Lab; Iwerne; F72 /P18
; ; Elizabeth; GREEN; Wife; Mar; 40; ; Iwerne; F72 /P18
; ; Amelia; GREEN; Daur; ; 13; Scholar; Iwerne; F72 /P18
; ; Annie; GREEN; Daur; ; 11; Scholar; Sturminster; F72 /P18
; ; Emily; GREEN; Daur; ; 6; Scholar; Iwerne; F72 /P18
; ; Edwin; GREEN; Son; ; 8 mo; ; Iwerne; F72 /P18

I'd be grateful for any ideas anyone may have about this?
Cheers Rosie.

I wonder if they had other family members in that area?

What is the evidence for travelling north - just that Elizabeth died there?

Where are the younger children in 1881 or are they missing too.

Many thanks for your reply. :)
That's my dilemma, I only know that Amelia and Annie married locally.
I searched the later census' to find the younger children thinking they lived with relatives in Dorset, but I couldn't find them.
Then the census for 1881 comes up as Elisha living in mid Lancashire, Blackburn/Oswaldtwistle? and is married to someone else and only his youngest son is living with him?

Apologies I was misunderstanding the "married locally" as being local to Dorset not to Lancashire!

I see the 1881 with youngest son and new wife for Elisha so it is a puzzle.

I don't know if this fits the details you have ...

One of my lines moved from Dorset to Lancashire because the mills in Lancashire  were looking for workers. As part of the recruiting drive they offerred work and lodgings and "imported" whole families. Many of the children also worked in the mills.

... who had also been recruited for the mills ?

Bob

May not be directly relevant to your case, but loads of Cornish miners were recruited with their families,  to come to Burnley area of Lancashire to work there in Coal mines at about the same time - there's apparently an area of Burnley known as "Little Cornwall" - so perhaps recruitment from the SW to the NW wasn't that unusual?
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Textile Mills were a form of employment.
Whole families worked in them.
From the age of twelve put to work .
All the best

Thankyou to;

Berlin-Bob.
And Milliepede.

Your replies are most welcome and I really appreciate the trouble you have taken to reply.

I had not realised that whole families were recruited to go places where work was more available? I suppose it makes sense though, as wasn't there an uprising by the Agricultural workers over drastically lowering their pay? (Tolpuddle Martyrs?) Elisha was an agricultural worker until he came north).

I have Elisha marrying in 1876 in Lancaster Registry office but the census for 1881 and 1891 he is in Oswaldtwistle working as a potters labourer. I cannot find much about his new wife, MaryEllen or Ellen and her daughter RoseAnn who I believe both were born in Ireland?

Amelia married in Brookhouse, at Caton St Paul's church to a William Purchase, they seemed a local family to Brookhouse, but I also saw Purchase's in Irwerne Minster too, so the families may have known each other previously in Dorset?

Cheers Rosie
ETA: Now if these census' were every 5 years instead of every 10 years, then I and a whole lot of others would know more about our ancestor's movements!

Yes the 1881 census has birth place Antrim Ireland for both Mary Ellen and Rose Ann.

However the 1891 census has Lanarkshire Scotland for Ellen  :-X (the original says Glasgow)

Her marriage to Elisha should give a fathers name for her, guessing she was a widow but she could have been a spinster I suppose.  Fathers name will confirm that if it matches hers or not.
