William ELLIOTT buried 1854, Stanley, St Peter
« on: Tuesday 04 April 17 19:34 BST (UK) »
After many years of searching, I believe I have found my 'missing' GGG Grandfather, William Elliott.
He was born 1791 and married and lived in York. Last seen in the 1851 Census in York, but by the time of the '61 his wife had remarried and I could find no details of what happened to him.

I have since discovered a burial record for Stanley in 1854 which states:

William Elliott   Abode: On board a vessel at Bottom Boat, buried Dec 16th, age 63yrs

As he was a 'Waterman' in the previous census, it all 'fits'.

I would be so grateful, therefore, if anyone can provide any information of any headstone, grave plot, death details, additional family etc.  Anything would be so gratefully received.

Previous generations were from Campsall, Kirk Smeaton and thereabouts.  Thank you so much

John Elliott, York

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Burial date was 11.12.1854.  Have you contacted the record office to establish a grave number and whether there is a headstone?    After such a long time any headstone may no longer exist

The address in the newspaper article matches the 1851 census ...so I'd say you've found him.

December 16, 1854 - Yorkshire Gazette - York, North Yorkshire,

On Wednesday last, Mr. William Elliott, of Barker Hill, vessel owner, left this city for a cargo of coals, and on the following day, when he was going on board at a place called Bottom Boat,he fell down and instantly expired.
The deceased was brought back to York, yesterday, for interment.

Thank you so much for the information I am so happy and grateful.
It is curious that the press says he was returned to York (where his family lived) but the burial record is for Stanley. Confused.
Which record office could give me the burial site/M.I  ?
Thank you again for your kind help
John

It's very strange - there is no death entry on freebmd matching his profile so I did a GRO search for deaths of a William Elliott aged 63 in 1854 and it turned up a William Elliott who died in Bridlington but that death was registered in the June qtr 1854.  Freebmd has it mis-transcribed as Ulliott

CaroleW - please do not blame FreeBMD for a mistranscription - that is where it appears in the GRO index - William Ulliott - between surnames of Uglow and Ullmer  :-*

I can't unfortunately attach a copy of the Index entry  :'(
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you for the info..but I am wondering if that is a different person as I cannot see why Bridlington should be listed as that's miles from both York (his home) and Bottom Boat where he was found dead in the December

Exactly the point I was making.  Stanley -cum-Wrenthorpe came under Wakefield Registration District

However - I have just found his death reg as Elliot and GRO check shows he was 63

Deaths Dec qtr 1854   - Wakefield 9C 16

BumbleB

The GRO online search threw up the William Elliott aged 63 Bridlington so I assumed if the GRO had it as Elliott the freebmd entry was a mis-transcription so never looked at the image

Thank you again, so much.  On the strength of that I have now ordered his death certificate.

I guess the next step is trying to find, for sure, where they buried him. Any suggestions welcome.

John
