There was a reluctance by certain sections of the SA community including Roman Catholics and the Scottish to register their childrens' births.  Many considered baptism to be a sufficient record.  In the Colony of South Australia many settlers lived a great distance from a bdm registrar and of course if they were late with the birth registration of their child/children, there were substantial fines.  As with all paper bases records that had to be submitted to a central office, many were lost locally or simply didn't arrive.  All birth information was given verbally to a local registrar which resulted in some rather strange spelling possibly due to illiteracy and accents. Someone else may be able to explain in greater detail.

Hi Cando, I replied last nigh, can't find it. but again you  have worked your magic wand.  I rechecked and found something  interesting  Was it the Biographical Index of south Australia 1836 to 1885 you found that Thomas GAGHEN was born 1834 Galway Ireland  if that is the case  I have been looking at  a Thomas GAGHEN  born 1825  Beagh wrong one. So maybe there will be church records for that year. ( I love clutching at any straws)  Sorry to have bothered you   to repeat yourself. there is so much that we have to sift through.  Thank you for what you do cheers  :) ;) ;D ;D
