WW1 hymn parodies
« on: Friday 07 April 17 16:06 BST (UK) »
Can anyone point me in the direction of additional hymn parodies sung by the British Army in WW1?

So far, I have:
Battle Hymn Of The Republic (They Were Only Playing Leapfrog)
Holy, Holy, Holy (Grousing, Grousing, Grousing)
Onward Christian Soldiers (Forward Joe Soap's Army)
The Church's One Foundation (We Are Fred Karno's Army)
There Is A Happy Land (Where Are Our Uniforms)
We Are But Little Children Weak (We Are But Private Soldiers Weak)
What A Friend We Have In Jesus (When This Lousy War Is Over)

I am sure there must be more hymn parodies.  "Whiter Than The Whitewash On The Wall" is supposedly based on a Salvation Army hymn, but I haven't yet tracked that hymn down.

NOTE: - I am only looking for hymns in this thread, not Music Hall songs or show tunes)

Update: found it!  It is based on "Blessed Be The Fountain Of Blood (Latta/Perkins 1881).

Surely there must be other hymns with WW1 parodies.

Anybody?    Somebody?

Yes, they were. Some parodies also recorded in "Tommy's Tunes" -  I'm searching for others.

That's the trouble - everything I could think of came from ( I checked with the script!) "Oh what a lovely War". There must've been dozens more, I'm sure.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

It's frustrating.  There are dozens of parodies of Music Hall songs and show tunes - British army, ANZACs, RFC, Canadians, Yanks etc (oddly, I haven't found much from thr Royal Navy) - but apart from the handful I listed below I haven't found the hymn parodies I hoped I would.

i tried sitting with a WW1 book of prayer & hymns, my grandfather's, leafing through its pages to see if any jumped out at me - but also it'd be the tunes, mainly, wouldn't it?

Sorry -  I only found songs not hymn paradies, which surprised me as we used to have regular old fashioned sing songs in the 1940s with my grandfather playing the piano and who was in WWI.  Both he and my grandmother met prior to 1914 when she was a tamborine girl in the S.A.
