William Horace Wickens
« on: Friday 07 April 17 22:43 BST (UK) »
The person I am searching is William Horace Wickens. Born 1869 in Kingston-on-Thames and lived in Southampton, he disappears off public records after the 1881 Southampton Census. But he recently was found in the Masonic records of Southampton as a member 1892-99, cited as a marine engineer. The English marine engineer society claims that old records are not kept. Do you have any idea on where to look to see if he is listed? 1899 is the start of the Boer War and years ago someone on RootsChat looked up armed services for me and found nothing. That means he might have been in the merchant marine. Are there records there?
This fellow's parents were Israel Wickens [d.1890] and Elizabeth Wickens [d.1902], Southampton.

Have you got Elizabeth Wickens' will, to see if he is mentioned there?

No. That's a good idea to 1902. She's in the 1901 Census; he's not. Someone else iss in the house in 1911. Are probated wills available on line? I doubt that she left anything, being poor. Both I found and uncovered in the 1980s in a paupers' grave. But, maybe. What do you suggest the next step is?

The question remains, what kind of merchant marine records are there?

The Elizabeth Wickens of Southampton who died 11 April 1902 left over £1000 - so suggest you look it up and order:

Well, she didn't really leave that amount. The L 1075 was "gross" value. Net was 203. Which means that 800+ was owed. To whom? Why? Really strange.

Yes, Wm. Horace is given L 50 to pay for all costs/debts. The rest went to my grandfather, L 153.
After this document, probated in 1902, Wm. Horace disappears from records.
Thanks for the suggestion.

As William Horace is the only William H Wickens born between 1866 and 1873, that does look like a very possible death.

Though there is this one:
Births March quarter 1865
William Henry Wickens  Westminster    1a   328

Ages out for either of them.
