Another strange occupation
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 22:16 BST (UK) »
In the 1901 census have come across Anthony Snow b1862 living in Swindon - occupation has been transcribed as 'Howling contractor'. There is a rather large cross over the first letter so it isn't clear.
Did Census night occur on a full moon?

Having checked the copy of the census sheet - it definitely looks like **wling contractor.
My mind is going through the alphabet to see if anything fits  - bowling, cowling, fowling
or even growling.

Hawling Contractor farm - spelling wasn't so pedantic as it is today  :)

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
