McPherson or McPhee 1871 Greenock census
« on: Sunday 09 April 17 02:09 BST (UK) »
Catherine McPherson (nee McPhee) was born around 1781 and died in 1876 (yes, she was 95).  In census records she is variously McPhee, Mcfie, McPherson.  I have all her census records except for 1871.  She died at 32 Sugarhouse Lane Greenock and the death was registered by her grand-daughter Jessie Brown.  I've had a look for a Jessie Brown in the 1871 census but they're all too young.  I would really like to know where she was in 1871.

Hi Sheena,

For some unknown reason there seems to be a lot of missing info. for the 1871 census' in parts of Scotland.

I have never thought to investigate as to why this is but it's not uncommon.

Do you have all Catherine's female children?

May be worth looking for a Macphee (with variants)/Brown marriage?

Unless Jessie was a 'Mrs' herself?

Thanks Annie.  I did a quick look for a McPherson/Brown marriage but might have to spend more time on it.  I was hoping this might be read by someone with access to the 1871 census who might be able to tell me who was living at 32 Sugarhouse Lane.  Regards, Sheena

Thanks Rosie, you are so clever.  Her daughter is Mary Livingstone and clearly the Catherine Levingston is my Catherine.  I can go looking for that census now.  Another little family story complete.

Great work Annie.  I didn't know you could search on given name only.  I think I'll be trying that for some of my other brick walls.

Sheena

Takes a bit longer to search with first name ...she is on the 1871 census on Scotlands People as Catherine Livingston age 94  ref 564/329/17 ...
