Son in Law was a term used then for a Step Son.
William always uses the name Loder.
There is nothing on-line for Eastnor, Herefordshire Baptisms or Marriages.

You would need to see or ask for a look-up of the 1830 Marriage to see if Mary was a Widow.

Also from Census Mary Loder/Davis is born c 1803 Bath, Somerset
So if she was a Mrs Loder Marriage may have been there.

Also it may be worth getting the 1859 M/C to see if William names a Father.

Oops missed that in 1851 Census a Wm George GATES, born c 1821 Eastnor, Herefordshire , is down as Brother in Law to Arthur Davis.
Occp Stone Mason.

1841 in Eastnor, Herefordshire we have;
Ann Gates, 25, School Mistress. Not born in County
Maria Gates, 20, Laundress, born in County
George Gates, 20, Mason**, born in County

Aah some records are on line for Eastnor, Baptisms for a couple of Gates are there on Familysearch.
MARION 23 Dec 1816
WILLIAM 12 July 1819
Parents GEORGE/ELIZABETH Gates

MARIA Gates married Henry SUMMERS 5 May 1842 Eastnor, Father GEORGE (F/S.Org)
ANN Gates married Samuel MANWARING 25 August 1842 Eastnor, Father GEORGE (F/S.Org)

Looks good :)

1851 Census
Eastnor, Hereford
Samuel Manwaring, 34, Head, Mar,  Carpenter Journeyman, born Stoke Edith, Herefordshire
ANN Manwaring, 37, Wife, Mar, School Mistress, born N, Manchester (1861 born Manchester, Lancashire)
Elizabeth Manwaring, 3, Daug
Mary A Manwaring, 11mths, Daug
Mary A DAVIS, 19, Visitor, Masons Daug*, born Stoulton, Worcestershire******
Charlotte Pritchard, 18, Servant

The Gates Family certainly got around.

So is Mary Loder/Davis nee Gates?
A Sister of Ann/Maria/William?
A Half Sister?

I cant find a Gates/Loder Marriage or a Baptism of Mary Gates c 1803 Bath though, Father George.

1841 we have in Stoulton, Worcs ;
Authur Davis, 30
Mary Davis   , 5
MARY Davis, 9****
Louisa Davis, 7
Maner Davis, 5
William Loder, 12

I found a marriage for a Mary Ann Webb and a Robert Loder in 1823 in Melcombe Regis, Dorset, which is where Mary Ann was born. So that confirms his legitimacy. Haven't looked further into Robert yet, but am fairly happy that this is right. Thanks again for all the help with the Loders.

Sorry I am confused. Where does this come in?
Quote;

I have given you William Loders likely Christening;
Likely misspelt;
WILLIAM Christened 9 February 1829, Eastnor, Herefordshire
Parents William LOVEN and Mary

So Parents WILLIAM/MARY Loder

1851 Census Mary Loder/Davis is born c 1803 Bath, Somerset.

I think she is likely born Mary Gates.

So we need a Gates/Loder Marriage.

To me is is very likely what I posted as Arthur/Mary Davis's Daughter Mary Ann Davis born c 1832 is with the Manwarings in 1851 Census.

So I would;
1) Start a new topic to look up the 1830 Marriage of Arthur Davis/Mary Loder to see if Mary was a Widow
2) Buy  the Cert and/or ask for a look up of 1859 Marriage of William Loder to Mary Ann Jones if I was you to check his Fathers name/occp.

Trish :)

Hi Trish,
You are quite right. Melcombe Regis is a complete red herring. I was so keen to find a father for William I didn't look at the facts properly.
I am going to send for the marriage certificate for William and Mary Ann Jones. That should give his father and hopefully a few answers.
I still can't quite put William George Gates (b.1821 Eastnor) as brother to Mary Ann (b.1803 Bath).
Could William George be related to Arthur in another way, eg Arthur's sister?
You mention obtaining the 1830 marriage between Arthur and Mary Ann. How do you do that? I thought the first date you could access was 1837.
I'll let you know when I have the marriage certificate.
Thanks for all your hard work.
Tess

Hi Tess,
Yes you may be correct and they Gates are related to Arthur Davis (maybe he was married before to a Gates)

I still think that is a possible Christening for you William in 1819 in Eastnor.

As to the Marriage you could start a new query asking if someone can look up the actual Parish Record to see if Mary Loder was a Widow.

But I would start with the 1859 Marriage Cert first.

Please do let me know what it says when you get it (just add the info on this query)

Trish :)

Marriage certificate now with me, a very bad copy, the background is very dark.
William Loder's father is named as William Loder, and I'm pretty sure his occupation is butler.
William and Mary Ann were both married from Silver St and witnesses were William Henry Millage and Sarah Boot. The church was St Martins, Worcester.
This could mean William's mother was in service. I've had a quick look for the father but so far no luck

Forgot to say his age is given as 30. I don't think we are going to get much further with this. Thanks for your efforts anyway.
