He was Glasgow born I believe but his father Alexander who married a Jane baldy was from Perth,.
I don't think they were travellers more displaced with highland clearance and industrialisation forced off their lands

The marriage on 8th June 1871 at Milton, Glasgow was Alexander Herschel to Mary Thomson,
A fair number of public trees on Anc ...try give this, and it does show (on the preview before paying for the certificate to be opened)that it is Mary Thomson he married on Scotlands People.     Only way it can be proved beyond doubt is for the certificate to be opened.

I think there are three Alexander Herschels.     One born in Perth, one born in Montrose, and, according to the latest post above, one born in Glasgow.

P.S.     I have just seen that certificate, which is on some public trees.    It is Alexander Herschel, aged 25, Drapers Assistant marrying Mary Thompson, 23, Dressmaker.      Alex's parents: Alexander Herschell & Jane Baldy.

Thanks for the help .  Yes there were 2 Alexander Herschells born in 1846 . Mine is the one from Montrose who married Mary Reilly from Linligoth. I have found them living in various places all down the country till Warrrington.  I have never found any record of their marriage though . If anyone can help with that ,I'd be grateful.  Mary died in Warrington aged 33.  If anyone can help with any other info , Also , what happened toAlexander after Mary died, I can't find him anywhere .

I can trace my family of alexander herschels back to 1750 he married an Agnes stot in 1767 Brechin Angus. There were then four generations of Alexander Herschel. It's a family name. Each one of those alexanders had brothers, I wouldn't be surprised if they would call one of their sons Alexander after their father? Montrose is all around the same area logie pert is the first registered birth of an Alexander Herschel, probs cousins way back, all displaced from the area around the same time and having to fend for themselves moved south growing further apart?
If you go on wikitree you can see all the sons the original Alexander had, perhaps there is a link.

burgess,
Alexander is still at Warrington in 1891...

         1891 Census at  Latchford, Warrington
Alexander Herschell, 45, Labourer, b Scotland
Maggie                    14
Isabella                    11
Annie                        4 born Birkenhead
John                          2 born Warrington.

Maggie & Isabella are on the 1881 census at Lythe, so Annie & John have been born since then.

I wondered if Mary died died just around the time of the 1891 census, possibly at Warrington.

Yes Mary died when Annie was 5.  John George died just after his Mother.  The next record I can find of Annie is in a home for destitute women in Lancashire... Salford , when she was 17. This is a mystery why she would be there .
