Margaret Lowery, late Robinson, formerly Cooper ?
« on: Sunday 09 April 17 21:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I,m trying to solve the mystery of my GGG Grandmother Margaret who marries John Lowery(b 1827 Jarrow). On my GG Grandfather Robert Cooper Lowery,s birth cert 8 Feb 1865 Margaret is down as Margaret Lowery late Robinson formerly Cooper. I obtained a marriage cert for John Lowery m. Margaret Robinson 19.10.1854 only to discover Margaret a spinster and her father Walter Robinson, not the widow and daughter of a Cooper as expected. Could not find another marriage match. Then discovered an earlier child William C, b1852 which pre dates that marriage, still no match. I have census with a Margaret d. of Robert Cooper, the name which comes down to my grandfather and is the middle name(Cooper) of many siblings. This could also be a red herring.
I can follow them all on census but stop at where Margaret joins in 1861.
The missing link is Margaret marrying a Robinson( there are a few), and then a marriage to my John Lowery as a widow(can,t find any). I may be missing something glaringly obvious and I could have been for a long time now.
Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated,
  Many thanks,

Martin

The birth for Robert Cooper Lowery 1865 has mothers maiden name Cooper.

Is the C for Cooper surname or is that a middle initial?

There's a William Cooper Robinson born 1852 mothers maiden name Cooper.

There are a couple of Margaret Cooper marriages with possible Robinson grooms

1849 Newcastle T William Robinson **

1850 Castle Ward John Robinson

But there are several brides/grooms for each so they may not even be the correct pairing  :-\

Have you got Margaret Cooper daughter of Robert in 1851?

** There's a William Robinson death in 1853 Newcastle T age 40.  Speculating but that would allow him to be the father of William C born 1852 but be deceased for Margaret to marry again in 1854.

Can't explain the marriage certificate you have mind but something to go on.

I wonder if Robinson is the red herring?  Mr Robinson was the father of the William born in 1852 but he and Margaret weren't married so the marriage you have is a red herring and you are really looking for a straightforward Cooper/Lowery marriage with no Robinson in between?

Wow, Milliepede; that is fantastic. I,ve had some of that info (the wrong stuff) for nearly 20 years and never been able to fathom it.. Really just come back to FH due to my wife,s interest. Surprisingly a few more than myself have been fooled by this (judging by their family trees, and leaps of faith). I have just the other night come across Margaret d of Robert Cooper in the 1851 census and thought that may be a breakthrough, clutching at straws springs to mind. I was always concerned that the marriage cert I have was not right but couldn,t prove it. And no wonder I couldn,t find a birth/ baptism for William, I was looking for a Lowery which is how he is portayed on the census with C being an initial for a middle name, but I must double check that now. Thank you so much for taking the time to help unravel this mystery. I,m at work at the moment and can,t wait to get home tonight to start work on the info you have given me. I will let you know how I get on.
  Best wishes,

Martin

Haven't completely cracked it (by a long shot!) but the birth for William Cooper Robinson could be an invaluable clue.  Need to know if a Robinson father is named and if so who he is/was.

Will keep looking for stuff :D

Baptism for William Cooper Robinson 28 Mar 1852 Newcastle

father William Robinson
mother Margaret Robinson

only a transcript so can't see any other info but William as the father certainly fits with the death in 1853 for the William age 40 leaving Margaret free to marry John Lowery - as Robinson widow.

As the marriage you had was Margaret spinster, although it seems the obvious one it just doesn't compute does it  :-\

John Lowery I think is single in 1851 so it's not like he was already married.  So maybe they didn't marry at all hence the middle name Cooper being inserted at every opportunity!

So if the marriage between William Robinson and Margaret Cooper from 1849 is correct and he died 1853 they should be together as a couple on the 1851 census.

And if he was 40 when he died then he should be around 38.
