Information on decommissioned (?) church needed
« on: Monday 10 April 17 07:46 BST (UK) »
One of my Cowan cousins has recently found a family letter talking about my gt gt granddad (James Cowan) being buried in a graveyard between Henry street and Jervis street. I can see from google maps that there is  converted church there now. Does anybody know a)what that church was called previous to its conversion b) if there is still a graveyard there and c) when the church was built. James Cowan died in 1869. Most of the Cowan and related families are buried in Glasnevin (including his wife) so I wonder why he would have been buried elsewhere?

OSI has been offline over the weekend due to planned maintenance (it's due back today) rather than a serious technical glitch.

All the g/stones were pulled up and used as footpaths, a lot are now stacked up at end wall of the now Public Park

By the 1897 - 1913 map on OSI mapviewer the graveyard is marked as disused.

Thank you all so much for your answers - rootschatters coming up trumps again.
Dathai, I did have a look previously at one of the old Dublin maps on Shane Wilson's site but the one I looked at didn't show a church at that location. I will try the OSI maps tomorrow when my brain is working properly ;D
Hallmark, it's such a shame that the gravestones were pulled up and used as footpaths but not unusual, I have seen churches where that has happened before.
myluck, thank you for the link. I think I will print it off and take my time studying it properly. It might have answered the question of why my gt gt gfather was buried there when his wife was buried in Glasnevin. The couple were married in a C of I church. I had always assumed that as the Cowan side have always been staunchly Catholic that  it was his wife's family that were C of I. It now looks like it was the other way round.
Sinann,  thank you for the link. It does look as though the gravestones against the wall have completely worn away, which is a shame. If I'm ever in Dublin I will have a look at the stones now that I know they are there.
Thank you all again
