1665 Marriage Allegation in Latin
« on: Monday 10 April 17 19:21 BST (UK) »
Can someone please transcribe this first bit of the marriage allegation between Joseph Merry of Snainton in Yorkshire and Catherine Hovington. I'm hoping it has something more than what the rest of the document entails. Thanks,

Louise in CA

It's Tyson.

Also, after Joseph Merry's County is Agr, which I think is Agr(icola) = farmer

It looks to be the Marriage Bond rather than the Allegation.

Robert Tyson is the second bondsman.

So the existence of the marriage BOND does not really mean that this couple ever married? Am I right in that? Let me describe why I ask.

This would have been the 3rd marriage of Joseph Merry.

Marriage #1 Ellen in 1652. An unborn infant dies in 1653. Then Ellen dies during the birth of a daughter in 1655 (who later dies Feb 1659).

Marriage #2 Apr 1659 Katherine Kirkeup (both widows). But she dies in Sep 1665 (no issue found).

Marriage #3 (?) 1665 Paver's Marriage Licenses has him marrying Catherine Hovington at Yapham. He is age 46, agriculturer; she a spinster age 20. No PR found for this marriage which makes me wonder if it really took place.

Marriage #4 (or #3) Oct 1668 Joseph marries Isabell Skelton ( and they go on to have at least 4 children before Joseph dies in 1680.

Anyone willing to weigh in on poor Joseph's unlucky marital life??
