Maxwell's
« on: Tuesday 11 April 17 21:07 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can shine some light on this family (picture attached). I have this screenshot from FreeCEN, on Ancestry they are put down as Bradwell's instead on Maxwell's. I believe they are my Maxwell's I'm tracing but if I search for any of these family members in other Census years there are absolutely no matches.
Is there anywhere where I can view original 1851 Scottish Census records for free?
I look forward to seeing what you guys think.
Thanks,
Jamie

Jamie, the entry from FreeCen is likely to be very accurate as it has been been transcribed from the originals by volunteers....a/try, not so much  :-\

Scotlands People is the only source of original images. The LDS have original films of the Scottish Censuses but getting hold of this film on loan can be lengthy.

What other info do you have on this family that might help find further info on them? Are you connected to one of their children?

The son David showing as born in Hamilton c. 1842, a couple of possible entries for him.

1861, there is a David Maxwell, 19 yrs old and a cork cutter. Born in Hamilton. He shows as boarding in the Paton household in Glasgow.

In 1871, this David has married (surname curtesy of a/try):

David Marwell 29 cork cutter b. Hamilton
Martha Marwell 26 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQZH-377
William Marwell 5 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F774-5JF
Elizabeth Marwell 3

Address: 8 Holmes Street, Hamilton

Likely marriage for this David and Martha from Family Search index https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTBG-SQ1

I can only see the two births connected to the 1871 census. Maybe one of the parents died early, or they left Scotland after this census?

There is a Janet Maxwell aged 20 on the 1861 census. She is showing as born in Hamilton and working at the Mackenzie household in Hamilton.

This Janet I think goes on to marry a John Shearer in 1862 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTB2-6LV

1871 census here

John Mackie Shearer 46 silk weaver
Janet Shearer 30 tambourer b. Hamilton
Mary Thomas Shearer 8
Robert Shearer 6
Margaret M Shearer 4
John Shearer 1

Address: 44 Brandon St Hamilton

Not long after this census, more children showing as

Agnes Maxwell Shearer 1871 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ8Z-8SD
William Maxwell Shearer 1873  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F774-54C

You could check the marriage cert on SP to see what parent details are included for this Janet and David previously

I think I have found the family still in Hamilton in 1861 using the Scotlandspeople index but can't find corresponding entries on either Ancestry or Findmypast.
Family comprises-
William 49
Rachel 40
Janet 21
David 10 ( wonder if this is 19 mistranscribed)
William 15
Agnes 12
I think Agnes Snr may have died in Hamilton in 1856 age 46 and there is a marriage for a William Maxwell to Rachel Bradnock, also in 1856 (Scotlandspeople).

That looks a great possibility for the family in 1861, Isobel  :) Would knock out the entry I found from 1861 for the David Maxwell, boarder (unless he was double listed which is not that common an error).

Great, thank you both for your replies.
I have eventually found all the entries that you found MonicaL.
isobelw - I am not a member of Scot lands People, are you able to share with me the 1861 record you found?

Anyone can register to use Scotlandspeople and you can view the indexes for free, which is what I did. Once you have registered go to the home page and put the name Maxwell into the surname box and select period 1861 to 1861. This will bring up all Maxwell  b/m/d for 1861 and also the 1861 census. Select county Lanarkshire, district Hamilton and then look for all entries in the list with ref 647/8 21 this will give you the list of those in the household. If you want to look at the original census entry buy yourself 30 credits ( £7.50) and  click on the view certificate box against one of the names with the 647/8 21 reference. It will cost you 6 of your credits to do this.
