Joseph Waterhouse = 1. Elizabeth Wyatt 2. Sarah Wyatt both at Glossop.
« on: Wednesday 12 April 17 05:44 BST (UK) »
I am researching my Wyatt ancestry from Glossop.
I have discovered that Joseph Waterhouse 1804-1893 married at Glossop 1. 1827 Elizabeth Wyatt 1806-1848 and 2. 1849 Sarah Wyatt 1802-1867. ? possible they were sisters.
Joseph and Elizabeth had a daughter Mary Ann Waterhouse 1833-1885 Thornsett.
The 1891 census for New Mills shows Joseph aged 87.
At the same location Harriet Wyatt aged 52. This may be a clue as to the family connection.

Can anyone please help with the parents Elizabeth and Sarah Wyatt in order that I may determine if they connects to my Wyatts ?

With thanks.

Have you seen the marriage register for Joseph's  marriage in 1848?
It's here on familysearch
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-62B7-BV4?mode=g&cc=1911752
If you have to 'sign in', you can open a free account to see the image.
Glossop registers are on there from 1848 only unfortunately.

Both he and she are of 'full age', and he is indeed a widower, and a grocer.
There are no names given under the 'fathers' column - just that both of them are 'dead'.
The witnesses are interesting though. They are Thomas Wyatt and John Wyatt, possibly her brothers? They sign their names, but she makes her mark.
She gives her residence as 'Bath, Somerset'. (This is not necessarily where she was born).
Perhaps she is working there.
The marriage is by licence, which you can find on findmypast.
He gives his age as 44, and a widower. She is  Sarah "Wayatt" of Bath, Somerset. As she couldn't write her name, this will be how the clerk has heard it.
She gives her age as 47 and a spinster.

There is an Elizabeth Wyatt christened 23rd Sept 1806 at Glossop of John and Ann on famsearch. Seemingly at New Mills Weslyan. (about 10 miles I think to Glossop).
If you check for their children on famsearch, they had quite a few - lots christened at non-con including a John in 1804.
There is also a record for a Sarah 'Wiat" ch 1795 at Hayfield (about 6 miles to Glossop), of John Wiat, and a Thomas Wiat ch in 1797.
(Sarah may have been 'economical with the truth' at her marriage! or she may just not have known exactly how old she was by the time she was about 50 - many people didn't know their birth year exactly).

A John Wyatt married Anne Bowden 28 June 1793 at Glossop. (no images that early on famsearch)

Perhaps you could find some wills of some of these Wyatts which may give you further information.
Derbyshire wills are on findmypast.

I see transcripts of the Glossop registers are here
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dusk/glossop_pr.html

You might like to look through them.
The entry for John and Anne's marriage in 1793 gives the surname as 'Whyatt' / 'Wyat'.
Both of Glossop.
Not much other information.
The witnesses are Henry Bray, who seems to sign 80% of the entries and was probably the verger!, Micah Mosley, and David Bowden.

I see in the 1851 Census for Glossop, Sarah gives her places of birth as 'Thornsett' - just a mile out of New Mills towards Glossop.
So it does look as if she was perhaps working in Bath when she got married, and wasn't actually from there.

Thank you solidrock and goldie61.
I think you have solved it for me.
I must assume that Elizabeth and Sarah were sisters , baptised the same day but born a few years earlier. They appear to be daughters of Thomas Wyatt and Tabitha Stafford. It is still not clear if that family connects to my Wyatts who lived at Blackshaw Farm Glossop.

Sarah must have been living Bath when she married Thomas Waterhouse.
I can see that she had a brother John so possible he was one of the witnesses.
I have noticed the age discrepancy.
I have the image of her marriage.

I appreciate your help.
