R.M.M.V 'Capetown Castle'
Union-Castle Mail Steam Ship Co.Ltd
From Capetown to Southampton, arriving Southampton 29 July 1949
Country of last permanent residence  - N. Rhodesia

I'm just trying to get my head around all this wonderful information and understand how it all fits together. CarolW mentioned that he travelled from Durban to Southampton of 21 July 1949 (see below).

William Thomas Gibson aged 21 arrived Southampton 21.7.1949 from Durban South Africa.
Occ Locomotive Fireman
Address 3 Glenrose Terrace Southport

Your research suggests that 8 days later he travelled from Capetown to Southampton. I cannot see how this was possible time wise. Are there any records showing where he returned to South Africa via boat?

Name Interests: Holland, Marshall, Townrow, Taylor.

I see - no probs.

Having spoken to the only person who can give me a very vivid information on the family, I believe that he may have been born in Canada. Would this be easy for me to find?

I found a passenger list that was very interesting. The ship[ sailed from Montreal to Glasgow on 14 May 1934. William is aged 6 but the destination address is 60 Cemetery Road, Southport. I believe that this is likely to be him but I have no knowledge of his parents. There is a Margaret (age 47) which I assume is his mother and Ceollia and Winnifred who are likely to be his sisters - no mention of a father.

That Gibson family returned to Canada 21.6.1935 from Liverpool - plus father William Gibson aged 49 occ bricklayer and a domestic named Mary Kennedy aged 47 aboard the Antonia.  Address was 60 Cemetery Rd Southport

Until you purchase a copy of the 1951 marriage cert - you have no name or occupation for his father to link him to any entry found.

Also - neither incoming or outgoing list has a middle name for him so he could be an entirely different person

I didn't know that they returned. I am not 100% sure that it is/was them - it was one of those gut feelings but I intend to purchase the marriage certificate and then go on from there.

You mention that, that family returned to Canada. Did William (who was 6 in 1934) also accompany them?
