Re: date of birth on death certs. I've checked certs for other families and dob are used when a person dies in hospital.
The 1911 census shows John Patterson born circa1866 in South Uist. He was a sewing machine salesman.
Mother Marion was a widow born circa 1858 in Uist (not shown as North or South. I found a child born to John McLeod and Marion Paterson so will follow that up.
There was no occupation for CatherIne aged 16.
I think the son John Paterson registered  the wrong name for his father

Hi Tazzy,

I found a Paterson family 1871 but can't tell whether it's your family?

1871 Garrynamonie (South Uist)

Donald Paterson (Head) 60 Mason b Harris (Inverness-shire)
Anne (Wife) 38 b N/Uist

Children all born S/Uist

Meron 13 (Meron = Marion & would fit with Marion being b c1858 on 1911)
Flora 10
Chirsty 8
John 6 (would fit him b c1865/66 but the closest on SP is 1862???
Rachael 5
Kate 2

I think there's a possibility there's been a mix-up with John & Chirsty's ages if this is the correct family?

For Ref;

PATERSON JOHN
1862
118/3 29
Boisdale

Annie

Added,

Could Marion have been married twice? If John Paterson is her brother the surname Morrison is a ? on the DC for Catherine ?

1881 Garrynamonie (S/Uist)

Ann Paterson (Head) W 49 Cottar b Barra (1871 b N/Uist)?

Children all b S/Uist

Chirsty 21
Rachel 16
Catherine 13

From the above, no sign of Marion, Flora or John, could they be on the mainland now?

I have also found a Paterson/Morrison connection albeit not the family I have given details for but they do seem to be related as there's a 'Harris' connection there too.

I will refrain from posting my find as I don't want to confuse things anymore than they already are until you have the BC of Catherine MacLeod.

If they are related, I will be able to give you plenty of info.

Do you have the BC for Catherine's son John Paterson?

Was he named John Paterson or John Paterson McLeod or any other combination?

Does it name his father & what surname & maiden name is given for his mother Catherine?

Was Catherine ever married prior to John's birth, if so who to?

The only birth for a Catherine McLeod b 1895 Govan is;

MCLEOD CATHERINE PRING
1895
646/2 46
Govan (Glasgow)

I would say her middle name is most likely Pringle.

I think the census info. for her given place of birth (Govan) is wrong?

You may have to do a few searches around the Glasgow areas before you hit the correct one  ::)

However, it may be an idea to check the death of Catherine's mother Marion who was already widowed in 1911 to find out who registered her death?

I note she's in another district of Glasgow too.

EDIT To add, just noticed a huge difference for her age on death  ::)

Born c1858 i.e. her age of 50 in 1931 would have her born 1881 which would be out by 23 yrs  ???
Of course it depends on who the informant was & that death too may need revised?

Either of these entries will contain exactly the same info. i.e. no need for both & hopefully the informant will be dau Catherine with her address too & of course her (Catherine's) father's name & occ. as well as Marion's parents names with mother's maiden name which may help with the 1871/1881 census info. I found?

MACLEOD
MARION
50
1931
644/24 31
Cathcart (Glasgow)

PATERSON
MARION
50
1931
644/24 31
Cathcart (Glasgow)

The Glasgow Districts are under the County of Lanarkshire
