Sarah or Elizabeth Dalton (c. 1760, Denby area)
« on: Thursday 13 April 17 03:30 BST (UK) »
There's a marriage on 12 July 1779 in All Saints, Clayton West with High Hoyland, for Richard Hampshire and Elizabeth Dalton. At least, her name is given as Elizabeth twice in the opening lines of the record but, next to where she signs with an X, her name is written as Sarah. I know this could be a simple mistake on the vicar's part - the bride couldn't read what he wrote - but it's still odd since the her name is written as Elizabeth, twice, just a few lines above.

I can't find a plausible baptism for Elizabeth Dalton in that part of Yorkshire, but there is one for Sarah Dalton in Denby, on the books of St John the Baptist, Penistone, dated 3 February 1760. I'd like to associate the child in the 1760 baptism with the bride in the 1779 marriage, but I hope this isn't wishful thinking. There is, after all, the curious issue of the bride's being called both Sarah and Elizabeth in 1779.

I'd be very grateful for any comments.
