I thought that earlier because I couldn't find them in 1881. Looking at births, there were possibilities with a mother named Peplar but I couldn't verify anything.
I think this is the scenario now - you may have this so I won't go into details.

1881 375/34/10
James snr is lodging with Ann Lamangton, a widow and her children, including a 2 yr old Ann.

1867 marriage Ann Pepler and Frank Lamderton are on the same index page.

1871 Frank and Ann and son Frank in St Sepulchre parish London.

I can't find a marriage between James and Ann can you?
I did look earlier but couldn't find a military record, as I said many did not survive.

Were there other children born to James and Louisa besides young James?

In 1918 Electoral Rolls

There is a James and Louisa Alexander living in Albion Cottages, Popham Street, Islington

There were no electoral rolls during the war. :(
