Grimsby Fisherman John W Selby
« on: Friday 14 April 17 09:13 BST (UK) »
Hi in the 1939 register a John W Selby appears living at King EL street in Grimsby (could it be King Edward Street ?) as a retired fisherman age about 66 and he gives his DOB as 14 November 1873.
I have not seen the register but from what i have been told this is the information on it.
Is there any other information about this man from the Grimsby area regards his life etc, i have looked online at all the usual sites but without any luck ie, his death or even his birth.
The only news i have is that i suspect that John W Selby is really a Walter Selby with the same birth date as appears in my Ancetry tree.

David in New Zealand.

This could be the birth of the John W Selby from the 1939 details you have posted -

John William Selby
q4 1873 Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire
Registration Year:   1873
Vol 7a Page 138

Mother's maiden name - Booth

Having looked at the information available on Walter Selby I can see why you have come to the conclusion that John William and Walter are the same people.

There is another John William Selby born 1871 and died 1873, mother's maiden name - Booth. It would appear that Ellis Selby and Emma (nee Booth) had another son who was named after his sibling that died but rather than call him John W he was known as Walter.

Yes this explains why i could never find a birth record for Walter, i have found his siblings and found there school records which had there dates of birth etc which lead me to check the 1939 register with walters DOB with no luck unless i tryed just his last name and found John W Selby.
Very interesting that according to Wikipedia the Borough of Charnwood in Leicestershire has the villages of both Barrow Upon Soar and Sileby, Walter names Sileby as his place of birth in other records.
So in conclusion i think we can say with some great certainty that they are the same man, thank you for what you have found regards john w Selby with his mothers maiden name being the same as  Walters, i will have to send for the birth cert now and i expect to his his father named as Ellis Selby.

I have researched ancestors of my brother in law, who lived on King Edward street. The street no longer exists in its entirety, but there are surviving images of the area. I'm trying to remember my facts. I know for certain that the area was one of the roughest and dirtiest in the area, quite something and was torn down some 50 or so/more years ago. King Edward street was close to the docks, so where most of the poor labourers, fishermen and dock workers worked. There are surviving images. There are still quite a few school records at Grimsby archives (North East Lincolnshire), one of the schools local to that area was Central Market School.
There are a number of books that provide information on the life of Grimsby fishermen (and their wives) and their lives during the wars

On the electoral registers from 1928-1931 he is at the same address, recorded as John William Selby.

He was S(ingle) in the 1939 register.
