Census returns for Nelson, New Zealand circa 1841 onwards
« on: Friday 14 April 17 19:23 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there are any census returns for Nelson, New Zealand, my husbands 4th Great Uncle William Pennock, his wife Hannah and their children Hannah, John and William emigrated under the assisted passage scheme in 1841. William arrived in 1841 and Hannah and the children arrived in 1842. I would like to be able to see what happened to them after that.
Many thanks
Carol

Hi Carol

Unfortunately there are no census returns available for New Zealand (that is to say, of the style of UK returns).   All NZ census returns were disposed of after the Governments of the day had extracted necessary information.

However, that little blip in our history, does not preclude us from tracing people - we have numerous other records and resources to call upon.  ;)

Firstly you might like to take a look at our PapersPast website (historical New Zealand newspapers) to see what you can find for your family ... then we can help you look further.

Hi Carol,

William PENNOCK travelled in very good company aboard the Whitby.
http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-LowJubi-t1-body1-d2.html

He was a miner, aged 28.
https://www.geni.com/projects/New-Zealand-Settler-Ships-Whitby-1841/12835

I'm struggling to find anything on Papers Past for him, either under PENNOCK or PINNOCK.

Do you have any information about either him or his family's lives following their emigration?

I can't find a death on NZ BDM up to 1920 under PENNOCK or PINNOCK.
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

I wonder if they might have moved on to Australia?

Aha! William and Hannah PENNOCK appear in the Wellington Pioneer Roll (Scholefield Index), and
this is held by Wellington Public Library.

I can get in to the library in the next couple of weeks and see what I can find for you.

Hi Carol,

Another question for you, please.

Can you tell us which ship Hannah and her children travelled on?

I wonder if John PENNOCK might have ended up in prison in 1867?

There is a reference to a John PENNOCK/PINNOCK in the Nelson Evening Mail of 11 September 1866, a victim of larceny.

I don't know why my earlier searches on Papers Past didn't find it, so I suggest you search Papers Past for the precise issue above.
