Carter Family, Kensington, London.
« on: Saturday 15 April 17 13:25 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on the Carter family of London. My great-grandmother Maria Carter married Henry Haynes. He was born in Tilehurst Berkshire, however she was said to be from Kensington, London. A William Carter was a witness. This may be her father.

The family were the same family that had a seed company.  Carter Tested Seeds were in business at Raynes Park. It became quite an established company.

Hope I can find related Carters out there, as they seems to be very little information on line.

Some further information I have just found. Believe they moved to Rayners Park in 1910.

Carters Tested Seeds was a company of seed and grain merchants, established in 1804 in High Holborn, London, with the initial trading name of James Carter, Dunnet & Beale. In 1879 the company registered its first trademark "Trocadero - Carters Grass Seeds", for agricultural and horticultural seeds.

Do you not have their marriage certificate? It should list her father's name and occupation.
The marriage was 1865,correct?

If you don't have the marriage certificate, how do you know that William Carter was a witness?

 >:( Sorry to confuse. William Carter was a witness to the marriage of  Sarah Haynes the daughter of Maria Carter and Henry Haynes. I do have a copy of Sarah's marriage certificate, but not a certificate for her parents Maria & Henry. No doubt I would have tried to obtain one at sometime.

You will need to order Henry and Maria's marriage certificate in order to discover her father's name and occupation.

There is quite a lot of information online about Carter's seeds - see for instance https://parksandgardensuk.wordpress.com/2016/09/24/james-carter-conquers-the-world/

Yes,  thanks Shaun I have just ordered this certificate. Not sure why I had a problem doing this years ago :-\

My great uncle came over to England from Australia in the 1960's to see his family. He was convinced that he should be included in the Carter family fortune, but left empty handed :D

At the end of the web page I linked to there is a response which states that James Carter's widow Johanna (nee Sherrington) died in 1865, That appears to be incorrect. I believe she died in October 1855, just a few weeks after James's death. She died intestate, and the Death Duty index records that her administrator was James Sherrington.
