Family research, John O'Callaghan / Ngawaara Tamihana
« on: Saturday 15 April 17 18:54 BST (UK) »
I am the great, great grandaughter of John O'Callaghan and Ngawaara Tamihana, I can't find much on info on John, they had a son Whakarongotai (Tai) O'Callaghan who was born 3 Aug 1893, one of Tai's children is my grandmother Eileen Te Oneroa MacPherson (nee O'Callaghan) who passed away in May 1990 in Rotorua and she had a brother Poraumati O'Callaghan.
I have found in the N.Z Archives and the old canterbury website that a "John O'Callaghan" owned a cutter called the "Leah", in Papers Past there is a John O'Callaghan an old resident of Cardona that died 3 July 1913, I am not sure if this is my great, great grandfather. I live in Australia now and am trying to research my family tree.
Any information would be much appreciated.

There are numerous John O'Callaghan deaths on BDM's so you may need to purchase some "printouts" to make sure you have the correct family working back from your parents
Maori BDM's were not compulsory until the early 1900's

Cheers Janette

Tai O'CALLAGHAN was in the army in WW1. His file on archway is not available at the moment, but there is this:

The attestation document in the Archway file may have information about his father,

Hi Johnf04, Thank you for such a quick reply, I found his army enlistment records through the N.Z archives, and they have copies of them on-line, with his birthdate and mothers name.
