Sorry! I have made an error, in my first msg, the cutter "Leah" was my other great great grandfather's ship on my grandfathers side , John MacPherson of Matata, formerly of Tauranga, It is very confusing with all these John's in the family. I have found quite a lot on him.

I guess you know that Tamihana can be a transliteration of the name Thomson, Thompson, Thomsen - just to add to the difficulties you may face!

Also that O'Callaghan can be Callaghan, Callahan etc.

Noting that the Army rolls have him (Tai) as O'Gallaghan

Now here are some connections that I am sure you are aware of

16/164    Private    NICHOLLS    Thompson William (MM)    Ngakowai Tamihana, Te Puke

19371    Private    NICHOLLS    Fredrick Obadiah    H & N Tamihana Nicholls, Te Puke

16/165    L/Corporal    O'CALLAGHAN    Tai    Ngawara Tamihana, Te Puke

I think probably Tai O' Callaghan and Thompson Nicholls enisted at the same time as their numbers are sequential.

When you do know a little of later descendants searching on here can be rewarding...

In the photographs there is a group showing several in army uniform.....perhaps one is Tai O'Callaghan....seeing as they joined together.  Does MM mean he got the Military Medal?
