Foundling records ??
« on: Sunday 16 April 17 19:11 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where I can find foundling records for Kent or London around 1901 / 1902 please ?
I've just found out my auntie's mother was a foundling but sadly we didn't know this until after she died. We wondered why she never spoke of her childhood and we didn't like to ask.
Thanks

Have you found your Auntie's Mum on the 1901 and 1911 census? Does it give any clue where she was living?

if she was a true foundling, then by 1901/1902 she should have been issued with an official birth certificate.

You can do searches with freebmd where the surname is "unknown" and then the childs name, after 1911 you can add in "unknown" to the mothers surname.

The LMA has published a leaflet about children at the Foundling Hospital, although at this stage there is no evidence she was placed there

https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/london-metropolitan-archives/visitor-information/Documents/33-finding-your-foundling.pdf

As adoption didn't become a legal process until 1927, if she was placed with a family by the local Board of Guardians, it would have been under a fostering type of placement but she could be recorded in the 1911 census as an adopted child.

You would have to find the location of a birth cert to see what district she was registered in to find out which Board of Guardians took care of her and then follow through from there in their records, if they survive.

She was called Rose Elizabeth and sometimes she reversed the names.
We don't know for certain where she was born. There was talk of Tankerton, Kent but aged 24 she was in London.
On her first marriage certificate in 1926 she gave her surname as Alderson (father George, deceased) but on her 2nd marriage in 1945 she put her father as Frederick William Anderson (deceased) so no help there.
Why would she give 2 completely different father's names ?

There are many possibilities on the 1901 and 1911 census but seeing as we don't know her father's actual name we have no guarantee they are her. If she was born in 1902 then we only have the 1911 to go on !

Don't know if below birth registrations are of any help, there are none to be had for Rose Elizabeth Alderson for the time period given. Note none of below are to a single mother, as it gives the mother's maiden names.

If she passed away in Surrey in 1987 and surname Pepper then dob given as 16 April 1902 which would almost agree with her entry in the 1939 register, which, although I don t have access can be worked out as 16 April 1901, under her first husbands name.

Have you looked for any school records for her ? Parent or guardian name sometimes given

Maybe she gave her foster father's first name on one marriage

Could she have found out or known  her birth father's name ?
