Only have a first name and an address...how to find in census?
« on: Sunday 16 April 17 19:47 BST (UK) »
One of my relatives listed 'Barnet, 6 Caledonia Road, Glasgow' as his contact person when he left Glasgow for the US in 1913. I'm trying to find this Barnet's 1911 census record (or other records from around that time).

Is there any reasonable way to search for him? I'm finding 63 first name Barnets and 6 Barnet surnames in the 1911 census in the Gorbals district. Is there any way to search by specific address? I'm happy to pay for the record but I don't want to pay for 69 records in the hopes of finding him.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi there  :)

From the 1913-14 Glasgow Valuation Rolls, a James and Rosa Barnet show as tenants at that address - www.theglasgowstory.com/images/TGSV19027.jpg As you can see, the property was multi occupancy.

There is a Barnet family in the 1911 census that could fit (ref 644/17 16/ 20 - Gorbals)

The thing throwing me is that likely wife is called Rachel rather than Rosa, although one of their children looks to be called Rosa.

James 48
Rachel 44
Rosa 21
Bessie 20
Meyer 18
Julia 16
Done 14
Hyman 9
Morris 3

Possible death for a 73yr old Rachel Goldstein/Barnett in 1941 in Pollok area.

Wow! Great work. How did you find that census record? I only know about ScotlandPeople which doesn't give a lot of info.

Now I need to try and figure out where they are from. (This is my first attempt at the FAN method)

Thanks for your help  :)

Who was your relative who gave them as a contact in 1913?

I just added a last comment re Rachel Barnet, with a possible mainden name of Goldstein.

The 1911 census index came from Scotlands People, just playing around with the general search index and results.

Who was your relative who gave them as a contact in 1913?

Emanuel Goldberg and his wife Sarah Shechowitz. They also emigrated from Russia so I was hoping it might be someone they knew from their hometown (which I'm trying to nail down)

Other surnames in this family group in Glasgow are Weinbloom, Kapit, and Novak.

These are daughter Bessie's details from Edinburgh https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTXR-KY4

So, that death for Rachel in 1941 is correct it seems.

Wondering whether their children's Scottish birth certs would be more specific with clues as to parents' origins. Scottish birth certs for 1855 and from 1860s include date and place of parents' marriage.

Monica

Added: They married in Edinburgh in 1889, so no clues there re Russia and possible origin.
