DINAH ROBINSON of WHITEHAVEN
« on: Sunday 16 April 17 20:25 BST (UK) »
I'm having a real problem trying to figure out which Dinah was the mother of Isaac Robinson - my Great Grandfather - who was  born Whitehaven in 1837, married in Kilrenny, Fife, in 1870 (name of certificate is IsaacRobertson) & died Kirkcaldy in 1901 as 'Robertson', meaning my father Robert Robertson never knew his Grandfather Isaac or Grandmother Dinah.  We only have a photo of Isaac.

Isaac's father was John Robinson, who I believe to have been born 3rd December 1799 in Kendal to a John & Ann Robinson.

Isaac's mother was a Dinah --------- ( always listed as Robinson ) Dinah Robinson died in October 1848 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, when she was 57 years old. I think that's correct, but not 100% sure.

I thought I'd found her as Dinah Edmondson on my last visit to Whitehaven Research Centre, then the name Dinah Allison started turning up, and then Dinah Faulder - all about the same time.  All married to a John Robinson in Whitehaven or thereabouts.

I think that my G. Grandmother Dinah was born 1795 and died in 1848 in Whitehaven.  These dates make sense.  But was she an Edmondson, an Allison or a Faulder ? My leaning is towards Faulder at present, but only because of the dates looking likely.

Anyone else following this tree ?  Any help would be welcome to get me out of this frustrating rut.
Anne.

Hi,

Dinah Robinson died in October 1848 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, when she was 57 years old. I think that's correct, but not 100% sure.

Using the new GRO index gives the followingdeath:

Robinson, Dinah; Age 55; Dec Qtr 1848; Whitehaven Reg Dist; Vol 25 Page 109

The above would therefore give a year of birth as 1792/93.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Hi,

The birth date of 1792/93 could be a match for this baptism on familysearch: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JMJF-WXB

The surname of the above baptism is Bankes. The fact that the above baptism took place at a 'Scotch Presbyterian' chapel or church could also be a clue.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Hi,

Dinah Edmondson was baptised at Crossthwaite rather than Whitehaven in 1793 if I have the right baptism?

James street Scotch Presbyterian was a non conformist chapel/church, perhaps a marriage may have taken place there? Not sure if all non conformist registers are on line or not.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Thanks all.  So now I have a Bankes as another possible.  I'm planning to get up to Whitehaven next week, so I'll check these out.   Anyone else with info please let me know.  Are there still Robinson's in Whitehaven/St Bees I wonder ?

At that time marriages were only permitted at -

Anglican churches
Synagogues
Quaker meeting houses

This looks like picking someone with the right name born in the right county.

Two Dinah EDMONDSONs married in Crosthwaite (i.e. Keswick) in 1820 and 1822, so moving someone of that name 25 miles to Whitehaven to wed seems fanciful.  :-\
