Vontournhondt
« on: Monday 17 April 17 11:03 BST (UK) »
Two boys (possibly brothers), David W & Louis E, with the surname Vontournhondt were boarded in Suffolk in 1911, later sent to Canada in 1923 through the Fegan Homes project. Many were sent to farming homes in southern Ontario.

I can see a David W Vontournhondt returned to England from Canada  in 1937 aboard the Duchess of Atholl.  I can also see a marriage to an Alice Livingstone in the Leeds area, W Yorks in 1952 but nothing after that. Did he return to Canada?

I have posted the same on the Canada board as well to see if I can find Louis (Lewis).

Any help gratefully received
K

Brilliant - ties in with his journey back to England nicely.

Its the 2 boys that were sent to Canada that I am really interested in so every little helps.

Looks like their father was a Belgian national, married in 1899 Cardiff RD.  I have found 5 possible children to date.  Looks like the parents may have gone back to Belgium at some point as I have a Joseph born c1905 doing military service in the UK (Merchant Navy) & an Oscar appears on the WW1 Medal Roll 1914-1920.

I can't see any deaths under that name on Freebmd, so I wonder what happened to his first wife? No births either, so they either didn't have children or they were born abroad. Mind you, with that name there could well be mistranscriptions.

The date would fit with a journey made by David back to the UK as per this posting on Canadian board

Perhaps this was your man in Newmarket Newspaper - The Newmarket Era - Thursday October 28 th 1937

Ravenshoe

The farmers are certainly hurrying along the crops ???? to the cellars as the early snowfall
looks like winter.
Mr. David Vontournhondt, who working for Mr. Smith for the past two years, left Thursday
to embark on the Duchess of Atholl for England which sails on October 29

The dates are interesting as he must have known his future wife, either that or it was a whirlwind romance!  ;D
