Any information please lewisham Union district
« on: Monday 17 April 17 22:35 BST (UK) »
Evening everybody

I was wondering if any body has an answer to a query I've just come across.

Today I've sent off for a birth certificate online from the GRO. As I closed the web page down after ordering the certificate I notice that it said George chedzoy  born 1876 in Lewisham Union district.

Lewisham Union district seemed a strange name, so I googled it and the search results kept pointing me towards the Lewisham Union workhouse.

Does anyone know if lewisham Union district on the birth certificate does mean George was born in the workhouse.(I know I'll find out when the certificate arrives )but Iam an impatient bugger

Thanks in advance for your help
Mark

Registration districts were based on Poor Law Unions, and often had identical boundaries. In the 19th century the terms 'Registration District' and 'Union' were often used interchangeably (if not entirely accurately). Registrars were often also Poor Law Union officials, and they were precisely the people who were filling in the district details on certificates and quarterly returns, so they used the term 'Union' a lot.
