John Walter and Elizabeth Walter
« on: Wednesday 19 April 17 04:09 BST (UK) »
Hi, my husband's 2nd great grandparents were John Walter and Elizabeth (nee Walter) Walter. The only information I have of them is from their daughter Hannah Walter's marriage and death certificates which I have enclosed. Hannah Walter was born in Maidstone, Kent circa 1864 and she immigrated to NZ around 1874 (going by her death certificate on how long she lived in NZ, which states 76 years)). I have been unable to find any passenger lists for Hannah and her parents or Hannah coming out with someone else; and also any England census for a John and Elizabeth Walter and daughter Hannah in the Kent areas. Hannah married Erick Victor Lundqvist in Wellington, NZ in January, 1885.
I have no idea if Hannah came out to NZ with her parents or some other relations of hers as have been unable to find any records for her parents John and Elizabeth's deaths on the NZ site NZBDM.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
 Thanks and cheers,
    Judy

1871 census  Looks like Hannah was John and Elizabeths granddaughter and maybe Mary was her mother.

Hannah Walter b1865 Granddaughter Maidstone Kent

Elizabeth Walter    Head  Widow  b1810 Canterbury Kent

Mary    Walter Daughter  b1847 Maidstone Kent

1851 census

John Walter. Head b 1807
Elizabeth Walter. Wife  b 1812
Charles Walter. Son  b 1835
Emma Walter. Daughter  b 1839
James Walter. Son  b 1842
Ruth    Walter. Daughter  b 1845
Mary    Walter. Daughter  b 1847

John Walter proberly married Elizabeth Palmer. 10 Oct 1836. Maidstone, All Saints.
Looks like John died 1867.

The GRO index is not showing a mothers maiden name for this record which may indicate that Hannah was illegitimate  :-\

Freebmd and the GRO index their records come from also show another birth registration in the same quarter Maidstone for a Hannah Walter ref 2a   505 - this record is not showing on the 'other' GRO index

It seems likely that Hannah's mother was registered at Maidstone in 1846 (Dec 5/345) as Mary Elizabeth Walter.

There is a marriage, in New Zealand in 1878 of a Mary Elizabeth Walter to a Francis William Stevens.  Could this be Hannah's mother?

Thank you all for all your help! The 1851 and 1871 census I do remember seeing it when I was on ancestry a good while back and wondered if that was "my" Hannah and that her mother was Mary Walter and John and Elizabeth Walter were her grandparents. The more I think about it now, the more I believe that this is the case. I will have to go and have a look on Family Search and see if I can find a passenger list for a Mary Elizabeth Walter or one of the Walter's from the 1851 census. Also I looked on the NZBDM site for the marriage suggested by Tony between Mary Elizabeth Walter and Francis William Stevens and then a death search and there is a death registration for Mary Elizabeth Stevens for 1907 aged 60 years which would make Mary Elizabeth born 1847 so quite possibly this is Hannah's mother. I will look at GRO also.
Thanking you all for your help.
   Kind regards, Judy
